SALT LAKE CITY — A new report designed to show the safest hospitals is giving Utah's largest hospitals some questionable grades.

According to the report from Leapfrog Group, only three hospitals along the Wasatch Front got A grades: Timpanogos Regional in Orem, Mountain View Hospital in Payson and Alta View Hospital in Sandy.

Intermountain Medical Center — basically a brand new hospital in the center of the valley — got a C grade. University Healthcare, University Hospital and Clinics, LDS Hospital, Salt Lake Regional and St. Mark's also got a C grade.

Three additional hospitals got B grades: Mountain West Medical Center in Tooele, Davis Hospital in Layton and Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful.

Essentially, all of the biggest hospitals in northern Utah got C grades, or hospital safety scores, in the new report.

Leapfrog Group is an organization set up by large employers and insurance purchasers across the country. According to the report, the hospitals are rated on 26 different measures of safety such as safety practices, surgical care and hospital-acquired infections. The report also takes into account information from several different sources, including the CDC.

However, there are going to be questions about the organization's methodology. It is unclear how researchers combined the numbers to come up with a letter grade. Additionally, the report does raise questions about some very trusted and highly respected hospitals.
