PROVO CANYON — As construction wraps up on the canal and construction on the trail above it begins, officials are warning residents that the Provo Reservoir Canal Enclosure Project area is still a construction zone.

The canal corridor has begun to look more like a trail, the Provo River Water Users Association is warning residents that heavy equipment and construction vehicles are still operating along the corridor, and that it is not open for recreation.

"We understand residents are eager to take advantage of the enclosed canal for recreational activities during the warm weaterh — but it is simply not safe," said Gerber Construction Spokesman Brad Sunderland. "For their own safety, residents need to remain off the corridor until the trail is officially opened to the public."

The trail, which will be 15-feet wide upon completion and run above the enclosed canal, will serve as a recreational area for bikers and pedestrians. It will also have an unpaved portion for horseback riders to enjoy. The trail will connect to other recreational trails, including the Provo River Parkway Trail and the Jordan River Parkway Trail.

It is scheduled to be finished next spring.
