(KSL News) A representative from the U.S. Department of Education was at West High School today with a surprise announcement.

Jose Bernardo Fanjul, a Spanish and social studies teacher at the school, had been told he needed to be there to translate. Instead, the visiting federal official honored him as this year's "American Star of Teaching" from Utah.

The award is given to one teacher in each state every year for improving academic performance and making a difference in the lives of students.
