(KSL News) Authorities say a pair of convicted killers who escaped from the Daggett County jail a week ago have been caught on a Wyoming highway after leading police on a chase that ended in gunfire and left one of the convicts wounded.
Convicted killers Danny Gallegos and Juan Diaz-Arevalo are in custody following the car chase and shootout.
At 9:30 Saturday night, police were notified of a carjacking near Green River, Wyoming. The two prisoners allegedly approached a 79-year-old man, tied him at the wrists and ankles with duct tape then stole his car and took off.
The man was able to hop to a main road where he was spotted by a couple driving by. They drove to cell phone range and called 911 to report the carjacking.
Police located the car, a Ford Explorer, and a chase ensued. Wyoming Highway Patrol spiked the tires near mile marker 102 on I-80.
When authorities stopped them, the convicts climbed out of the SUV each holding a gun. Gunfire broke out. Gallegos was shot in the stomach. He was taken to the hospital.
Diaz-Arevalo ran but was immediately caught by authorities and booked into the Sweetwater County Jail.
The men apparently have stayed together since escaping from the jail.
We don't have details at this time about when the men will be returned to Utah.
