SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake police officer helping children get to school safely Thursday was in the right place at the right time to help a woman who was giving birth in her car.
The officer was working a school zone at 2700 South and 700 East about 9 a.m. when police dispatchers received a call of a pregnant woman who was in a gas station parking lot nearby and birth was imminent.
The veteran officer quickly responded and assisted the woman and her husband as she gave birth in the front passenger seat.
Salt Lake police detective Dennis McGowan said paramedics arrived shortly after the birth and took the infant to a local hospital where he was reportedly doing fine.
McGowan said police officers are trained to expect the unexpected, and in this case the officer was receiving congratulations from his department for doing a great job.
