SALT LAKE CITY — Police have identified the man fatally shot by police on Friday following the robbery of the Zions Bank branch at 701 E. 400 South. Police have also arrested a second man in the case.

Steven Charles Leonard, 63, was shot by officers after officers chased a vehicle away from the area of the bank and then pursued one man on foot after he got out of the vehicle near 1600 West and 400 South.

The foot chase continued into the courtyard of an apartment complex. "That person turned and made a furtive move towards the officer, and shots were fired," said police Lt. Melody Gray.

Detectives also arrested Jason Gibson, 37, for investigation of charges that include aggravated robbery and homicide, the latter charge relating to the death of another in the commission of an aggravated felony.

Gray said no officers were injured in the shooting, and Leonard died at an area hospital after being shot by police. Police have not released information on how many shots were fired, or whether Leonard fired a weapon.

Witnesses to the robbery said one man entered the bank and brandished a handgun while another man waited in the getaway car outside, Gray said, adding that police do not expect they will have additional suspects.

The police department has placed the officer involved in the shooting on paid administrative leave, following department policy, pending an internal review and joint criminal investigation by police detectives and the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office.
