SALT LAKE CITY -- The man accused of killing a woman in a bathroom at Fairmont Park and raping another woman in Pioneer Park was charged in Third District Court Tuesday.

Paul David Vara, 30, was charged with aggravated murder, object rape and forcible sexual abuse in the death of Kristine Marie Gabel, 45, on Dec. 18.

The details of the murder were released that same day.

It's a crime so shocking that even some veteran court employees and media reporters had a hard time reading it. Court documents contain a graphic and detailed summary of the victim being disemboweled and mutilated.

The cause of death was determined to be "multiple factors, including strangulation and extensive loss of blood," according to court documents.

Vara is also a suspect for a separate rape at Pioneer Park on Dec. 14. There was no indication Tuesday if charges were still pending for that incident.
