(KSL News) Asbestos may be the saving grace of a historic Provo church.

The Deseret Morning News reports Provo has issued a permit for the demolition of the St. Francis Assisi Catholic church. But it will cost more than $100,000 to remove the building's asbestos.

That has opened the door for preservationists to try to save the church, after they failed to do so in April. The developer who could purchase the property the church sits on says he's willing to consider a new deal with the preservationists.
