SALT LAKE CITY -- Major closures set to last the entire summer begin Tuesday as crews use daytime hours to make road improvements.

North Salt Lake

The Beck Street ramp to northbound I-15 will be closed for a little more than a month while crews build and pave new roads there.

Motorists are advised to remain on U.S. Highway 89 or to access I-15 via 600 North in Salt Lake City or 2600 South in Bountiful. Other alternate routes include I-215 to I-80 and Legacy Parkway.

Taylorsville

Drivers in Taylorsville should be aware of construction at the intersections of Redwood Road at 4700 South and 5400 South.

The Utah Department of Transportation expects slow-downs in those areas as crews work to widen the intersection.

UDOT spokesman Adan Carrillo says, "We're also going to install one of four continuous flow intersections at 5400 South and Redwood Road. Overall, by the end of this year, we will have four additional continuous flow intersections in the Taylorsville area."

Carrillo says the continuous flow intersections will improve east-west traffic in that area.

Utah County

The first Utah County I-15 Core project closure begins Tuesday. It affects the southbound lanes of I-15 between the American Fork 500 East on- and off-ramps.

Crews will install steel bridge supports in order to widen the freeway. Three lanes will remain open, but UDOT still expects some traffic congestion there.

Carrillo says, "There's only going to be three lanes going southbound on I-15, and that's going to be creating some amazing delays. We just want people to plan ahead, to try to avoid traveling during peak times so they can avoid delays."

The changes will be in place for about two months.

The entire interchange is being redesigned to a diamond interchange, like the one at the American Fork Main Street exit.

The American Fork closure is the first during the day for the I-15 Core project, which is the major rebuild of the freeway in Utah County. The project includes:

  • Adding two lanes in each direction from Lehi Main Street to Spanish Fork Main Street
  • Rebuilding and refiguring 10 freeway interchanges
  • Replacing 55 old bridges
