SALT LAKE CITY -- The Episcopal Diocese of Utah has narrowed its search for a new bishop. Whoever is chosen will succeed retiring bishop The Right Rev. Carolyn Tanner Irish, the 10th Episcopal Bishop of Utah, who has served for 14 years.

After 14 months, a search committee has narrowed the applicants from 48 to four:

  • The Rev. Canon Michael Barlowe of the Diocese of California
  • The Rev. Canon Scott B. Hayashi of the Diocese of Chicago
  • The Rev. Cannon Juan Andres Quevedo-Bosch of the Diocese of Long Island
  • The Rev. Canon Mary C.M. Sulerud of the Diocese of Washington, D.C.

Bishop Irish released a statement Friday, saying: "I am delighted to see this slate of extremely gifted finalists and feel a sense of vision and strong leadership that any one of these priests will prayerfully serve the Episcopal Church in Utah."

A special election convention will take place on May 22.
