SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Utah Supreme Court has heard arguments about whether the parental rights of a Sandy couple were violated when the state tried to force their son into chemotherapy for a cancerous tumor in 2003.
A district judge last year dismissed a lawsuit filed by the parents of Parker Jensen, saying the family's constitutional claims were decided earlier by a federal judge who tossed out a similar suit.
In a Utah Supreme Court session Wednesday at the University of Utah, attorneys for the Jensens said the Utah Constitution offers broader protections than the U.S. Constitution for parental rights when choosing medical treatment. Attorneys for several doctors and child protection officials disagreed.
The court did not immediately make a decision on the claims.
