NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A university official in Kenya says one student has died and 141 were hurt in a campus stampede after students mistook several accidental explosions for an extremist attack.

The vice chancellor of the University of Nairobi tells The Associated Press that students panicked when an electrical transformer exploded, fearing it was an attack by Islamic extremists like the one earlier this month at another Kenyan university.

He says many students were injured when they jumped from upper floors of their dormitories.

One-hundred-48 people were killed when Somalia's al-Shabab rebels attacked Garissa University College in northeastern Kenya on April 2.
