Woman hit and killed while crossing street

Gene Kennedy reporting A pickup truck hit and killed an elderly woman on a busy street in Rose Park this morning. This is the second auto-pedestrian accident in that area in the last few months.

Salt Lake City police say 67-year-old Manuela Moreno was not using the crosswalk when she was hit and killed while crossing a street near 1000 North and 1400 West.

Police say Moreno was a volunteer at a nearby elementary school, but the Salt Lake City School District is on spring break, so it's unclear where she was heading.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened, but for now, it appears in every sense of the word to be an accident.

Police say the victim and her husband got off a UTA bus at a bus stop then crossed 1000 North. She was hit about 60 feet from the crosswalk by a red truck traveling westbound. "We're interviewing the driver, who did stop immediately after the collision," said Lt. Rick Findlay, with the Salt Lake City Police Department.

The accident happened just before 7 a.m., and police have not cited the driver. They say there are no plans to charge him.

As for the victim, police say she lived in the area and may have crossed 1000 North before. "It's a dangerous street, it's a dangerous intersection, a dangerous crosswalk," Findlay said.

Then the driver took off. That hit-and-run sent the victim to the hospital in critical condition. Salt Lake City police say he survived but is now paralyzed. The driver who hit him has never been caught.

Obviously, two very different accidents with different circumstances. However, they are a sad reminder that if you're going cross this road, even if you're using the crosswalk, be on the defensive.
