Wasatch County Library evacuated after suspicious package

SALT LAKE CITY — A report regarding a suspicious package prompted the evacuation of the Wasatch County Library on Saturday. Police said no explosives or explosive materials were found at the scene. According to Wasatch County Sheriff Jared Rigby and Heber City Police Deputy Chief Branden Russell, police received a message regarding a suspicious package at 10:38 a.m., prompting the Salt Lake City area bomb squad to arrive on the scene. The library was scheduled to start its Summer Reading Kickoff Party at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. In a tip sent to KSL by Tatum Smuin, who claimed knowledge of the situation, people were instructed to go inside shortly after it began. [gallery size="medium" ids="918046,918047,918048,918049,918050,918051"] The tip states, "The head librarian announced that an item had been found with a message that reportedly said, 'Don't open, for the cops.'" Smuin claimed that anyone who had parked in the back parking lot of the library "was required to leave their vehicle behind and find another way home." The Heber City Police released a statement about the suspicious package and their presence at the library. According to the statement, a suspicious bottle had been located near the library with a note indicating it was for law enforcement and should not be touched. A K-9 unit was brought in to assess the bottle. According to the statement, the K-9 "provided a positive indication on the item." Police used a robot to address and dispose of the suspicious item before performing a sweep of the surrounding area. No explosives nor explosive materials were found at the scene. The Heber City Police Department thanked the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office and the Salt Lake City bomb squad for their assistance. The Heber City Police said they would continue investigating the situation.
