Utah fire chief killed in Emery County crash

GREEN RIVER — The Green River fire chief died Sunday afternoon in a crash on U.S. 6 in Emery County, troopers said.

At 3:53 p.m., a white Infiniti was eastbound near Green River when it crossed the center line and hit two semitrailers, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the Infiniti, identified by the fire department as Philip Engleman, died on scene, troopers said.

“With heavy hearts we have said goodbye to one of our own, Chief Philip Engleman. Our deepest condolences are with his family at this time,” the fire department posted on Facebook.

The semitrailer drivers were uninjured in the crash.

The State Bureau of Investigation and other agencies were contacted to aid in the investigation, troopers said.

The Emery County sheriff, Green River mayor, a victims advocate and peer support counselor were contacted to help those affected by the crash, the UHP said.

As news of Engleman’s passing spread on social media, condolences began pouring in from community members.

“We are so saddened by the loss of Chief Engleman today. Philip gave decades of volunteer service to Emery County Ambulance and the Green River Fire Department! He will be deeply missed on so many levels,” one woman wrote.
