Transit authority's police force grows in advance of FrontRunner

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (AP) -- The Utah Transit Authority is bolstering its security force in preparation for the opening of the FrontRunner commuter rail.

UTA's officer corps is growing from 22 to 37. In addition to performing regular law enforcement functions, officers will check tickets like conductors and educate riders about safety. Senior officers are currently training new personnel on TRAX and other existing means of public transit.

FrontRunner, a 44-mile line that runs from Ogden to downtown Salt Lake City, opens April 26.
