(KSL News) A special prosecutor was appointed in Canada today to consider possible criminal charges against polygamists with historic ties to Warren Jeffs.
Back in 2004, the polygamists were in an area known as Bountiful, British Columbia, just north of the Idaho border. Originally, the community was closely aligned with the Utah FLDS group, but the Canadian community splintered when Warren Jeffs rose to power.
The British Columbia attorney general told KSL today that members still regularly travel back and forth between Utah and Canada. He says an investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has led him to believe that sexual exploitation is taking place, but he referred the case to a special prosecutor to review evidence and consider constitutional issues.
