RSL, Real Madrid exhibition game called off

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A summer exhibition game between Real Salt Lake and Real Madrid has been called off.

The two teams were scheduled to meet Aug 9 in Utah as part of a10-year-agreement for biennial games in the state.

RSL General Manager Garth Lagerwey says the Spanish club instead chose to make more money by playing in Colombia.

Exhibition games typically require home teams to cover the visiting teams' traveling costs and appearance fees. Lagerwey says the slumping economy and rising oil prices would have made it impossible to cover the cost for Real Madrid and still make a profit.

He says he is talking with four other teams as possible replacements.
