Rally against Nevada coal-fired plant draws hundreds

ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- More than 250 turned out to rally against the construction of a coal-fired power plant proposed just across the border near Mesquite, Nev.

The $1.2 billion Toquop Energy Project would generate 750-megawatts of electricity for Nevada and Arizona customers.

At Tuesday's rally, opponents of the project said the plant will cause significant air pollution and called for an end to coal-powered energy dependence.

Company officials say plans for the plant include clean technology that is environmentally responsible.

The Nevada Division of Environmental Quality is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the project Thursday in Mesquite.
