PROVO, Utah (AP) -- A proposal to require background checks for every renter in Provo, except for Brigham Young University students, has been abandoned.
Instead, the city is considering a proposal to reward landlords with lower fees if they conduct background checks.
The city had been considering requiring landlords to conduct background checks for everyone who applies to rent a unit.
The only people who would have been exempt from the check would have been students at a school with a code of conduct.
BYU is the only school in Utah County with such a code.
