Ogden considers first step in water infrastructure work

OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- The Ogden City Council will vote Tuesday on whether to approve about $675,000 worth of improvements to the city's water infrastructure.

The proposal was prompted by several water main breaks that left thousands without water in recent weeks. It includes plans to design two underground storage tanks capable of holding 5 million gallons of water in the event of a similar emergency.

City engineers say the tanks themselves would cost another $8.1 million. They would store about a week's worth of water in the winter or two day's worth in the summer.

The council has said it plans to introduce $52 million in water infrastructure improvements throughout the city over the next five years.
