SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson doesn't want Italian nuclear waste stored in Utah.
The Utah Democrat sent a letter Thursday to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
EnergySolutions wants to import 20,000 tons of Italian waste through U.S. ports. It would be processed in Tennessee, and a portion would be stored at a company site in Clive, about 70 miles west of Salt Lake City.
Matheson now joins other officials in Tennessee, South Carolina and Wyoming in opposing the application.
Matheson says he doesn't want Utah to become a dumping ground for the world's nuclear waste.
