SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The House approved a resolution Friday encouraging the state school board and local school districts to give students Veterans Day off.
House Joint Resolution 4 is sponsored by Rep. Carl Wimmer, a Republican from Herriman.
Wimmer says a lot of students have been impacted by wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He says that by giving students the day off, they'd be able to pay respect to those who have served in the military.
The resolution wouldn't force school districts to take the day off, but some lawmakers say they're concerned it will be seen as a mandate.
The resolution passed in the House 41-29 and will now be heard in the Senate.
