AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The head of the Texas agency behind the seizure of more than 400 children from a polygamist group says he's retiring.
61-year-old Carey Cockerell will step down at the end of August as commissioner of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
Cockerell listed his government accomplishments over the decades in a statement. But he made no mention of the April raid in which all children from the Yearning For Zion Ranch in Eldorado were removed.
The Texas Supreme Court later ruled the children were improperly separated from their families.
Cockerell said he was proud of his nearly 3 1/2 years at the child-welfare agency.
Previously, he was Tarrant County's director of juvenile services for 20 years.
