Free parking on nights and on Saturdays could soon go away

Mary Richards reportingRight now, if you come downtown for a game, dinner or play, you can park for free after 6 p.m.

But the Salt Lake City Council is looking at running the meters until 10 p.m. and on Saturdays. It would generate about $300,000 a year.

The money would help pay for Fire Station No. 5 on 9th and 9th. The mayor wanted to change the station to cut costs, but residents flooded the council with concerns.

They also talked about raising the money you put in the parking meter or raising the fine if you get a parking meter violation.

Other ideas to make money include hiking cemetery plot fees and eliminating three firefighters. A decision is expected later this month.
