Evidence hearing set for man accused in 2 teen siblings' deaths

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A man accused of fatally shooting a teenage brother and sister in a fight that started over a shirt is set for an evidence hearing in February.

Court records show the hearing was set Monday for 28-year-old Mario Cervantes-Angel. The four-day hearing is expected to begin Feb. 21.

He is facing two counts of aggravated murder, which carries a potential death-penalty sentence.

Prosecutors say a fight broke out July 6 in a Midvale apartment complex after he and three others showed up to confront 15-year-old Abril Izazaga.

Charging documents say her 16-year-old brother Jose Izazaga came out with a knife to defend her after Cervantes-Angel slammed the girl against a brick wall. Police say Cervantes-Angel responded by shooting both teenagers.

He is being held in jail on $2 million bail.
