MIDVALE — A man who police say tried to take a woman's cell phone and ended up dragging her along the pavement as he tried to drive away has been criminally charged.
Nicholas James Jepperson, 39, who is homeless, was charged Monday in 3rd District Court with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony.
On Nov. 3, Jepperson went to the area of 7500 South and 700 West to inquire about a cell phone a woman was selling, according to charging documents. But after handing the woman money for the phone, the woman feared the money was counterfeit and reached into Jepperson's car to get her phone back, the charges state.
That's when Jepperson "accelerated, dragging (the woman) from where she originally stood. (She) sustained road-rash and a 12- to 14-inch laceration to her leg," according to the charges.
Police say the woman was dragged a short distance. Detectives were able to trace the phone number that Jepperson used to contact the woman to identify him. A warrant was issued Monday for his arrest.
