Barricaded man coaxed out by mother

Nicole Gonzales reporting It took a call from a mother to persuade a man to come out of a home he'd barricaded himself in for over five hours this morning.

Salt Lake County Sheriff's SWAT team and Bountiful police worked all morning to get this man to surrender peacefully. Twenty-five-year-old Rodney Condie was wanted for aggravated assault in Bountiful, but barricaded himself in his home near near 1100 East and 9400 South.

Condie's next-door neighbor and another neighbor who lives across the street say they were terrified during this standoff. They said SWAT teams came to their doors saying the neighborhood wasn't safe and that they had two choices: stay in the basement or leave immediately.

"It was just the kind of stuff you see in the movies. You don't expect to see it at the house across the street from you," neighbor Lana Colonna said.

SWAT teams surrounded the neighborhood, containing three blocks near the residence. For some time, law enforcement wasn't sure if Condie was armed.

SWAT negotiators were able to talk to him via cell phone to try to resolve the situation peacefully. They were also able to get Condie's mother on the phone, and in the end she persuaded her son to surrender.

One neighbor says police have been to this home before and that there's always shady activity going on late at night. "Nothing but problems ever since I've been here. It's like a good neighborhood, except for like three houses that are just rental houses where it's just problems, nothing but problems," Colonna said.

Police say that Condie and his girlfriend had a falling-out recently. Last night around 8:00, authorities say Condie followed the woman into Bountiful. When she went to a friend's home, Condie started kicking and banging the doors of her car. That's when the woman called 911 frightened.

Officers say once Condie saw she was talking to police, he smashed one of the windows and stole her purse. After that, he got a ride to his home near Sandy and locked himself inside.

Condie was booked into the Davis County Jail for aggravated robbery. His bond amount is just over $1,000.
