Avalanche center says danger still high in upper-elevation areas

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Utah Avalanche Center says that avalanche danger remains high in much of the Western Uinta Mountains.

Weak snow from earlier in the season is staying packed near the ground, increasing the likelihood of avalanches in steep, high-elevation terrain. Snowmobilers heading for the area are advised to go with extreme caution.

The center says there is less of a threat in the Central Wasatch region from Ogden to Provo, but still greater in high-elevation areas than lower ones, where wind can clear out some of the snow.
