LAYTON, Utah (AP) -- Hill Air Force Base was overpaying by hundreds of thousands of dollars for bus fare and UTA van pools.
The Deseret News in a copyright story says Air Force auditors cited the base for wasting money on a mass-transit program for base employees.
Bus fare and van vouchers were given to the same base employees, and a dozen riders were receiving double van vouchers. Some contractors ineligible for the tax-free benefit were riding vans anyway.
Auditors said Hill was wasting $133,000 a year, subsidizing 1,000 Hill employees riding in vans leased from the Utah Transit Authority.
Base officials say they corrected the problems by hiring a person to take oversight of the program from a part-timer for the UTA.
