61 Utah employees affected by ATK staff reduction, company says

CLEARFIELD, Davis County — About 70 Orbital ATK employees in three states lost their jobs Monday.

A total of 61 Utah employees were affected by the staff reduction, according to spokeswoman Jennifer Bowman. She said they worked in the propulsion systems department.

“We were able to minimize the impact to our workforce by re-deploying several individuals to other Orbital ATK divisions; however, reductions are never easy and we have lost some very talented individuals,” Bowman wrote in an email.

Additional employees lost jobs in Florida and Alabama, according to the company.

Bowman said, “This reduction was driven by a business need to reduce costs, streamline and become more efficient while maintaining the appropriate skill level to run our business in the future.”

Previously, ATK laid off more than 2,000 employees in a period of two years due to the completion of contracts connected to NASA’s retired space shuttle program. The program officially ended in 2011.

The company employs approximately 2,900 people in Utah at facilities in Clearfield, Magna and Promontory.
