SALT LAKE CITY — Speculation about the committees Sen. Mitt Romney might land on floated around Washington shortly after his election to the Senate.
That ended Thursday as the Utah Republican received his assignments: Foreign Relations; Health, Education, Labor and Pensions; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
Earlier media reports said Romney had planned to submit requests for the foreign relations, finance and commerce committees.
In a November interview, Romney expressed an interest in finance as well as foreign relations, education, health care, agriculture, small business and natural resources. He acknowledged that as a freshman he would not necessarily get his first choice.
Romney and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, will not serve on any of the same committees. Lee and retired GOP Sen. Orrin Hatch both served on the Judiciary Committee together.
Lee will continue on Judiciary as well as Commerce, Science and Transportation; Energy and Natural Resources; and the Joint Economic Committee.
