Study: Virus death toll in NYC worse than official tally

New York City’s death toll from the coronavirus may be thousands of fatalities worse than the tally kept by the city and state, according to an analysis released Monday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Between March 11 and May 2, about 24,000 more people died in the city than researchers would ordinarily expect during that time period, the report said. That’s about 5,300 more deaths than were blamed on the coronavirus in official tallies during those weeks. Some of those excess fatalities could be COVID-19 deaths that went uncounted because a person died at home, or without medical providers realizing they were infected, the researchers at New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said. — Associated Press

Utah Supreme Court to hold virtual hearings for criminal and civil cases

The Utah Supreme Court will expand virtual hearings for more civil and criminal cases, officials announced on Monday. In-person court proceedings will not resume while the state is in the moderate-risk phase until further notice, court officials said. Unusual circumstances can allow for in-person proceedings. Additionally, the state Supreme Court has created a working group to establish “a way to conduct safe and effective in-person proceedings that follow state and federal pandemic safety guidelines,” a statement said. The group will submit its recommendations to the judicial council for approval before in-person proceedings will resume. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Arches and Canyonlands National Parks to begin increasing recreational access

Arches and Canyonlands National Parks will begin a phased reopening starting at the end of the month on May 29. Before then, the parks will remain closed. Starting on May 29, some recreational access will resume access to park roads, trails, restrooms and prior permitted commercial operations may also resume, the park service announced on Monday. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Park City Institute suspends summer concert series at Eccles Center

The Park City Institute will cancel its summer concert series at the Eccles Center, the organization announced on Monday. “Everyone at the Park City Institute worked hard to curate an exciting, diverse summer series. We were hopeful that we could give our community an opportunity to gather and experience exceptional musical performances in a safe environment,” Park City Institute Executive Director Ari Ioannides said in a statement. “Unfortunately our local community performance venue will be dark for the foreseeable future.” — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

10 clients, 3 staff test positive for coronavirus at Midvale family shelter

Ten individuals staying at a Midvale homeless shelter have tested positive for the novel coronavirus and three staff members have also tested positive, Salt Lake County officials announced on Monday. The Midvale Family Resource Center clients who tested positive come from seven different families and all have since been relocated to a county quarantine facility. The center, located at 529 W. 7300 South, is no longer taking in other clients and the facility is working with the county health department to allow new families to stay at the center as soon as possible. Utah sees 111 new cases of COVID-19, 1 new death

Utah's COVID-19 statistics show that the state has seen a plateau in cases of the disease over the past few weeks, but there is still a long way to go, health officials say. Monday, Utah’s total number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 111 from Sunday, with one new reported death, according to the health department. The person who died was an older Salt Lake County man who was under the age of 60, according to Dunn. The man was hospitalized at the time of his death, she said. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Delta suspending service to 10 US airports as COVID-19 pandemic continues

In an effort to increase health and safety measures as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Delta Airlines will consolidate service in several markets that include multiple airports starting Wednesday, according to a news release from the company. The airports where Delta will temporarily suspend service are:

Chicago Midway International Airport

Oakland International Airport

Hollywood Burbank Airport

Long Beach Airport

T. F. Green International Airport (Rhode Island)

Westchester County Airport (New York)

Stewart International Airport (New York)

Akron-Canton Airport (Ohio)

Manchester-Boston Regional Airport

Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (Virginia)

The company is expecting service to those airports to be suspended until at least September. “The safety of our employees and customers remains our primary focus as we navigate these challenges together,” Sandy Gordon, Delta's senior vice president of domestic airport operations, said in the news release. “By consolidating operations while customer traffic is low, we can allow more of our people to stay home in accordance with local health guidelines.” — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Polygamous Utah town struggling amid coronavirus pandemic

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the polygamous town on Utah’s southern border is struggling with unique economic and educational challenges. “We want them to be in school again,” said Hildale resident Ross Chatwin about his five children who attend public schools. “We don’t feel like they are getting as good as education at home as they would be getting in school.” Chatwin has some of the same worries as parents across Utah — like his high school senior not getting a normal graduation — but said that quarantine life in the once closed-off community is especially difficult. Utah Poison Control Center fielding thousands of calls as coronavirus hotline

The Utah Department of Health’s coronavirus hotline has been ringing off the hook since COVID-19 broke out in Utah, playing a key role in keeping families informed. The Utah Poison Control Center has been taking those calls as the hotline ever since. “Every question is important,” said Amberly Johnson, Utah Poison Control Center director. “It’s better to call and find out the answer, rather than sit and worry about it.” The UPCC, located on the University of Utah campus, typically takes 120 to 150 calls a day. Now, doubling as the coronavirus hotline, it’s not unusual that it gets 10 times that number of calls on peak days. The Utah Coronavirus Hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and be reached toll-free at 1-800-456-7707. — Jed Boal, KSL TV
