Pence disagrees with Indiana Senate school funding plan

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Gov. Mike Pence says he isn't sold on the school funding plan being proposed by the state Senate's budget leaders.

The state budget proposal approved Thursday by the Senate Appropriations Committee phases in funding changes over five years in order to lessen cuts to many urban and rural districts with shrinking enrollments. That plan also doesn't include the $40 million in new grants for charter schools that Pence has requested.

Pence says in a statement he continues to support giving charter schools more money for buildings and transportation that traditional schools receive through local property taxes. Pence says he also prefers the House school funding proposal because it has money more closely following students in growing suburban areas.
