SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A new ruling from a federal judge makes it unlikely that Republican Gov. Gary Herbert or lawmakers will be called to testify in the Utah Republican Party's lawsuit over changes to Utah's election system. The judge ruled the motives behind the law are irrelevant to deciding if it's constitutional. A message left with the Utah GOP's attorney was not returned.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A former Utah National Guard soldier who pleaded guilty in a scheme to pocket thousands of dollars in recruitment bonuses has been sentenced to five years' probation. A prosecutor says during a sentencing hearing in Salt Lake City that Jesse Lee Howell was 19 when his supervisor started feeding him recruits' information so they could collect thousands of dollars in bonuses.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities are accusing a Utah chiropractor of charging people thousands of dollars for a phony weight loss scheme that he said required no exercise. State officials say Michael Kunzler is charged with 11 counts of felony communications fraud, forgery and exploitation of a vulnerable adult. Kunzler's attorney says his client adamantly denies the accusations.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The family foundation named after the late former Marquette coach Rick Majerus has given a $1 million gift to the university to create an endowed scholarship in his name. Marquette said the money will help first-generation students who demonstrate financial need pay for tuition in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is the largest scholarship gift in the school's history. Majerus took Utah to the NCAA title game in 1998, losing 78-69 to Kentucky.
