OREM -- A Utah Marine killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan is being mourned by his family in Utah.

Lance Cpl. Carlos Aragon was from Orem.

Aragon joined the Marines just a few months after he graduated from Mountain View High School in Orem in May of 2008.

Wednesday, one of his former teachers shared some thoughts about his student who went on to be a Marine.

Peter Glahn, assistant principal of Mountain View High School, said, "He was very quiet, very respectful and he was kind of -- had an outward exterior that might seem to intimidate some people, [but] he really was a gentle guy."

Aragon is being remembered as a good student who worked hard to reach the high standards required of the Marines.

The school plans to find some way to honor Aragon for his service and sacrifice to the country.

What is... the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion?
The 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance battalion conducts combined arms reconnaissance and security operations as part of a Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) to establish a designated secure area, provide combat information, reaction time, and maneuver space. On order, it conducts combined arms offensive and defensive economy of force operations to preserve the combat power of the MAGTF.

"It is always sad to hear someone you know has sacrificed their life for the country," Glahn said. "Our hearts and thoughts go out to his family at this time and to his friends."

Aragon's body was returned to the United States Wednesday at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. A brief ceremony followed at the base.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Aragon died Monday while supporting combat operations in the Helmand province of Afghanistan.

He was part of the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, based out of Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Our numerous calls to the United States Marine Corps for specifics about his death have not been returned.

Gov. Gary Herbert's office released a statement Wednesday, offering condolences to the Marine's family.

Funeral arrangements for Lance Cpl. Aragon have not yet been announced.
