Mary Richards, KSL NewsradioA man in jail for domestic violence could be charged with murder if detectives can prove his abuse caused the death of an unborn baby.
Police say Max Hatch dragged his pregnant girlfriend up the stairs by her hair.
West Valley Police Captain T. McLachlan: "She was pregnant at the time and subsequently lost the child."
West Valley Police Captain T. McLachlan says the family believes the baby died because of the abuse. It was only six weeks away from its due date when doctors say the placenta detached from the uterine wall.
McLachlan says that condition could be from abuse or natural causes, so it will be hard to prove.
"What we have to look at is strictly the legal terminology and the legal definitions."
If there's enough evidence, prosecutors will decide on the homicide charge.
