OREM -- Police arrested a man Saturday for using the camera in his cell phone to secretly photograph a woman as she tried on clothes in the fitting room of a clothing store on 79 N. State St.

Woman sees camera while trying on clothes

Orem police Sgt. Craig Martinez said, "The victim was changing in the fitting rooms at DownEast--and they have coed fitting rooms there, and so men and women can pick their own stall--and in the stall next to her was the male suspect."

The woman told KSL on the phone she noticed a shirt on the floor in the next stall, and it looked like someone's keys were in it. She tried on several pairs of jeans, but noticed the man kept moving the object around in his shirt, and she suddenly was mortified to realize it was a camera lens.

She immediately told store employees, who called 911.

Derek Finlinson, 24, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of voyeurism and later released from custody.

He heard store employees calling police, and he was able to delete all of the images on his phone before they arrived. At this time, it's unclear how many people may have been victimized.

Warning from police about cell phone cameras

Police say everyone should realize that with cell phone cameras everywhere, and it can be easy for someone to violate your privacy without you ever knowing.

"Always be looking out for a phone or a camera," Martinez said. "It doesn't take much to stick a phone over a dressing room and get photos of someone. You've got to be aware of your surroundings, always be looking out. There are a lot of people out there who could be doing this. There are probably a lot of people doing this that we don't know about because they haven't been caught."
