WHITE CITY -- Firefighters say a family in White City is very lucky to have escaped a house fire uninjured.

The fire started at the house near 900 East and 9900 South around 10 p.m. Sunday and moved very quickly through the upper level.

The home's occupants say they saw smoke and flames coming from a second-story bedroom. They immediately evacuated, went to a neighbor's house and called 911.

When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting out of the second-story windows.

Battalion Chief Dave Olearain of the Sandy City Fire Department said, "We could see flames from Sego Lilly, or we could see a glow from Sego Lilly. So it was rolling out of the windows pretty good."

Several rooms on the second floor were burning. Firefighters from Sandy and South Jordan knocked down the flames within 10 minutes.

"They did a transitional attack," Olearain said. "They got in there very quickly, after putting some water on it from the outside. They got the fire out quickly."

The fire caused an estimated $60,000 to $100,000 in damage.

Firefighters have not yet released the cause of the fire, but they say it appears to have started in the master bedroom.
