Utah state lawmakers could come up with a way to get a share of the profits at EnergySolutions. It would be a safety net if the company were to win a lawsuit.
EnergySolutions recently proposed to split with the state $3 billion in profits it would make from disposing of foreign nuclear waste if lawmakers would allow it to import the radioactive waste.
Legislators now are saying Utah is willing to take the profits without helping make the import of foreign waste possible.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports lawmakers talked Tuesday about writing a bill that would make the company give Utah a share of any foreign waste profit if EnergySolutions wins its lawsuit on the issue. The lawsuit challenges who can control waste at the west desert site.
EnergySolutions goes to court tomorrow to argue the lawsuit.
