(KSL News) The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints defended its choice to tear down the historic First Security Building.
Groups called for preservation of the building after the Church announced the building would come down as part of the downtown renovation project.
The Deseret Morning News reports the Church maintains that the building's old design makes it too difficult to modernize.
A Church spokesman says the building is not fit for office or residential use. That means the Church would not be able to recoup the millions of dollars it would take to make the building seismically safe.
