SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A bill that would let people register to vote online has been approved by the Utah Senate.

Voters are currently required to register by mail or in person so the state can have a signature on record. Senate Bill 25 would allow a signature to be transferred digitally from driver's license records.

Bill sponsor Sen. Pete Knudson, R-Brigham City, says Utah's voter turnout is too low. He says allowing people to register online could improve voter turnout in the next election.

Washington and Arizona already use an online voter registration system.

The bill passed 25-2 on Wednesday. It will require one more formal vote before it is heard in the House.
