ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- Dixie State College has a new identity.

The school announced a new nickname, the Red Storm, and mascot, a black bull named Ragin' Red, on Monday.

Dixie State College Athletic Director Dexter Irvin says the changes give the school a positive new identity.

The school's board of trustees voted in 2007 to retire the use of the Rebel nickname and Confederate identity, which was adopted in the 1950s.

The University of Utah made changing the mascot an ironclad condition for Dixie's desire to affiliate with the state's premier public university. A Dixie State College spokesman has said changing the mascot had nothing to do with the proposed union with the University of Utah.
