BYU football offensive staff includes former Patriots, Alabama coach for QBs

PROVO — BYU wants Alabama.

Or at least, one of the Crimson Tide's offensive assistants.

The Cougars announced Alabama offensive analyst Tyler Hughes to a similar role as assistant quarterbacks coach in Provo, adding the veteran coach Tuesday to head coach Kalani Sitake's staff replacing Matt Mitchell, who joined Jim Mora's staff as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Colorado State.

The former Snow College wide receiver was part of a large round of promotions and additions to the Cougars' offensive staff announced Tuesday, a group that also includes former Utah and Houston standout Raelon Singleton as assistant wide receivers coach; former special teams analyst Dylan Almond as assistant special teams coach; and operations and defensive assistant Tyus Moe as assistant linebackers coach.

The new face in the room is Hughes, who is hardly new to football on the Wasatch Front.

Hughes returns to Utah after spending the past year as an analyst at Alabama, as well as two stints with the New England Patriots and a quality control gig at Washington.

The Salt Lake City native returns to his home state where he got his start in the profession as offensive coordinator and running backs coach at Murray High.

Hughes coached at Snow from 2004-2012 as a wide receivers/tight ends coach, offensive coordinator and head coach for the final two years of his tenure when he led the Badgers to a 20-4 record over two seasons including an 11-1 mark and No. 3 national ranking in 2012.

While at Snow, Hughes coached a number of quarterbacks who ended at the Division I level, including former BYU starter Christian Stewart; former BYU and Southern Utah quarterback Cade Cooper; and Quinn Mecham, a two-time second-team all-conference selection for the Badgers who finished his career at Kansas.

After one year on staff at Ohio State, Hughes took head coaching jobs at Division III Southern Virginia and Minot State before returning home as the head coach at Bountiful High from 2018-19. After rebounding from a 1-4 start to finish 5-7 in 2019, Hughes made the rare jump to the NFL as an offensive assistant in New England, spent a year as a quality control assistant at Washington, and returned to the Patriots as wide receivers coach in 2024.

When former Washington coach Kalen DeBoer accepted the Alabama job two years ago, he brought on Hughes as an analyst for the Tide.

The offensive group joins a new round defensive hires, as well, including the promotion of former Utah defensive lineman Chad Kauha'aha'a to outside linebackers coach under first-year defensive coordinator Kelly Poppinga, as announced a day earlier.
