SALT LAKE CITY — Raising kids with strong values — like honesty — isn't always easy in today's world. But one Utah mom is hoping to make it a little simpler through storytelling.
Stephanie Goodman, an author and illustrator from Orem, has released a new children's book titled "Timmy The Termite: It Was This Big," a playful yet powerful tale that teaches kids the importance of telling the truth.
A story that hits home
The book follows Timmy, a young termite who tells a tall tale about being chased by a giant red ant. But as the story unfolds, Timmy learns a valuable lesson about honesty and the consequences of stretching the truth.
"I told a lie," Goodman reads from her book. "I was jealous of all the fun things my friends did over the summer."
The inspiration? A real-life moment from her own family.
"Not to throw any of my children under the bus," Goodman laughed, "but a big story was told. And we tried to teach them about a big story versus a lie."
A dream realized
Goodman said she's always dreamed of being a stay-at-home mom and a children's book illustrator. Now, she's living that dream — and using it to help other families.
"I am creating stories that empower children with values," she said. "These are the things we want to teach our children. And I wanted to write a book that would help them experience that story."
A legacy inspired by Mr. Rogers
Goodman hopes "Timmy The Termite" leaves a lasting impression — just like her beloved role model, Mr. Rogers, did for so many generations.
"I hope this leaves a legacy, like Mr. Rogers did in our life — of who we want to be," she said.
