LAYTON— Investigators have determined a fire that destroyed a building at the Layton Meadows Apartments complex last week was not human-caused or suspicious in nature.

The early-morning fire tore through a building of the apartment complex, 480 W. 1425 North, leaving nearly 40 people without a home on Friday. The blaze also forced evacuations of two nearby buildings, prompting a total of 80 people to be evacuated, according to Red Cross disaster services program manager Sarah Marshall.

A media release issued by the Layton Fire Department on Tuesday stated that while investigators are still trying to identify the cause of the fire, investigators have confirmed it was not started by a person and does not appear to be suspicious.

"The affected building, a 24-unit apartment structure, has been declared a total loss by the Layton city building official, with an estimated structural value of approximately $2.3 million and an additional $500,000 to $600,000 in content loss," the release reads.

The impacted building has been deemed uninhabitable, and the scene has been turned back over to the property management group.

The fire department encourages residents displaced by the fire to coordinate with the property management team to retrieve their personal belongings.

The American Red Cross has continued to provide help and resources to affected residents with temporary housing, resources and recovery support.
