SALT LAKE CITY — Move over, Atlantic City: Monopoly is about to get a Salt Lake City-themed makeover.

Top Trumps USA, through a license agreement with Hasbro, announced the new, officially licensed Salt Lake City-themed Monopoly game on Wednesday. Monopoly: Salt Lake City Edition will feature attractions, neighborhoods, businesses and other features unique to Utah's capital city within the 22 board squares and game cards when it arrives in stores next year.

Yet, it's unclear what will be featured just yet — and that's half of the fun. The company wants residents to weigh in to help design it by submitting their favorite attractions, businesses and anything else that makes Utah's capital city special.

"This game is going to look completely different from what you remember playing as a kid," said Aaron Green, a representative for Top Trumps USA, as he announced the game while standing next to Mr. Monopoly at Pioneer Park.

"We're going to replace all the popular squares — Indiana Avenue and the railroads with things around Salt Lake City," he added. "All the things you remember as a kid that you loved going to are going to be memorialized."

Monopoly's history is complex, but it remains one of the top-selling board games. The game most people are familiar with emerged in the 1930s. Charles Darrow created Monopoly, which quickly sold 5,000 copies before Parker Brothers acquired the game in 1935, History.com points out.

However, the outlet notes that historians largely believe it truly originated with The Landlord's Game, which Lizzie Magie patented in 1904. Whatever the case may be, it has a lasting legacy, as Hasbro, which now owns the rights, says it has attracted over a billion players across 114 countries.

Various official versions of it have also been made for different occasions, including about 20 different city editions every year. This includes a Park City version, which debuted last year.

The game designer picked Salt Lake City through a process of reviewing demographics, population size and other features. Landing the 2034 Winter Olympics and Paralympics helped, Green said.

Wednesday's announcement came with the launch of a feedback process to gather ideas for the Salt Lake City game. Only the board's four corners and tokens will remain the same from the original version, while the rest will be left up to the public.

Green said he plans to meet with local officials and community leaders, and other prominent locals, to determine what should be featured. Residents can also submit their ideas to saltlakecity@toptrumps.com between now and Dec. 26. Most of the features are expected to be within the city limits, but he said there could be some "gray area" that allows regional features.

"We'll go through all these lists and then, over the next few months, it's my job and my team in Rhode Island to figure out what's going to make the best edition of Salt Lake City Monopoly," he said. "We want to make this game so Salt Lake it'll be unmistakable. ... It will be unequivocally Salt Lake City."

Monopoly: Salt Lake City Edition is expected to be ready for store shelves at local stores by the summer of 2026. It'll also be available nationwide.
