ST. GEORGE — A man indicted on a federal drug distribution charge in December has been sentenced to five years in federal prison.

Tomas Eduardo Ibarra, 28, of Taylorsville, was charged with possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute when he appeared for a sentencing hearing held Aug. 21 at U.S. District Court in St. George. Police said more than 22 pounds of suspected fentanyl was recovered from a vehicle in Kanab during Ibarra's arrest.

The federal case was filed following a traffic stop on Dec. 8, 2024, when a Kane County sheriff's deputy stopped a Ford Fusion on U.S. 89. A records check revealed Ibarra had an active warrant for his arrest.

During Ibarra's sentencing, U.S. District Judge Ann Marie McIff-Allen sentenced him to serve 60 months in federal prison. Upon his release, Ibarra was ordered to be turned over to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation.
