SALT LAKE CITY – Construction is starting on new affordable housing near the Utah State Fairpark. The new apartments being built are meant to attract more families and young professionals downtown and make it more affordable.

It was announced that 110 apartments will soon be built at 915 W. North Temple. The builders, J. Fisher Companies, held the groundbreaking Wednesday morning.

The apartments going in are called 9th Note, named for the city's Note District. They're described as having a design for future-forward living, offering a free public work space close to TRAX, mixing retail space on the street with spacious apartments above.

The new affordable housing is one of 17 projects Salt Lake County is helping to fund through $25 million in federal COVID-19 recovery funds, expected to add 1500 units of affordable housing over the next few years.

"We're committed to building affordable housing. We know we have too many people on the streets … people are struggling to afford housing – this is one more step in the right direction," said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson.

Designs for the 9th Note project are still being finalized, but they will include one- to two-bedroom apartments with rent capped out at 60% of average median income. Right now, that puts rent at roughly $1,250 to $1,450 a month.

Construction is expected to finish by February 2027.
