SALT LAKE CITY — For a time, the BlendJet 2 portable blender was a hot seller – maybe too hot. Reports of the popular kitchen gadget catching fire and leaving some users with severe cuts led to a mandatory recall of some 4.8 million units back in December 2023.
Jody Tippetts says she followed the recall's instructions for the two BlendJet blenders she bought – to a tee.
"They had you cut up the little o-ring so that it wouldn't operate anymore and throw your base away," she said of the instructions she received.
"A couple weeks, we'll get you a new blender," she says was the promise from the manufacturer.
Nearly two years later, Tippetts is still waiting for her replacement blenders. She even bought a new one herself when she couldn't get replacements promised in the recall.
Frustrated, she asked me to take a spin at grinding out some answers.
Last year, I helped Aubrey Dyson with the same trouble. After I reached out to BlendJet, they sent her a replacement with an apology for the delay.
But this year, my emails to BlendJet went unanswered.
Digging deeper I figured out why. The official recall page posted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission states the company is out of business and the replacement remedy is no longer available.
So, do the feds have rules on how long a company can string you along after a recall? The Consumer Product Safety Commission didn't respond to my inquiry, but its handbook suggests recalls be handled "timely." As to what "timely" means, it doesn't specify.
For Tippetts – getting strung along for 20 months without a replacement or a refund has left her a question.
"Was this just all a scam?"
Despite its closure, BlendJet's website is still active online. But when I tried to order a BlendJet blender, it wouldn't let me.
